The Pfyffers

Ludwig Pfyffer von Altishofen
(1524–1594)

The powerful military contractor and politician was called the ‘Swiss King’ due to his pan-European activities in the mercenary trade. In 1567, he and his Swiss soldiers saved the life of King Charles IX of France. It is unclear when the king’s words of thanks were inscribed at the Lion Monument.

Carl Pfyffer von Altishofen
(1771–1840)

The young officer in the Swiss Guard was a first-hand witness to events of the French Revolution but was on furlough in Lucerne during the Insurrection of 10 August 1792. Creating a monument to his fallen comrades became his life’s purpose; in 1821, he saw the work completed.
